Australis Medical Ltd is Christchurch-based medical practice that provides specialist services in the areas of complex pain and rehabilitation, aviation medicine, occupational & environmental medicine, and psychiatry.

Dr Christopher Rumball

FFPMANZCA, FAFOEM (RACP), PhD, MPhil


Dr Rumball is qualified as both a Specialist Pain Medicine Physician and a Specialist in Occupational & Environmental Medicine, and is Director of Australis Medical. Since commencing work in Christchurch in 2010 he has focused on complex pain and vocational rehabilitation cases working in close collaboration with the broader team in the community. He trained in pain medicine at Burwood Pain Management Centre.  He has an academic background, with a PhD in the area of developmental origins of health and disease, a Masters in Bioscience Enterprise from Cambridge University and has consulted in the area of translational medicine.  With this background he has given the Australis Medical practice a strong focus on using technology to improve care and to collect data to enable research. He is also a founder of Occupational Health Canterbury, Clinical Lead for Sense Medical in their development of the Cortex iOS application, and part of Australis IT which works with Medgate UK to offer the Cohort Occupational Health software system in Australasia.



Dr Leanne Parker

FAFRM (RACP) 

Dr Parker is a Rehabilitation Physician with over a decade's experience of working in the field of Pain and Pain Management. Initially experience was gained at the Burwood Hospital site including the Burwood Pain Clinic and Serious Injuries Rehabilitation Services (Brain and Spinal Cord Injury). Since 2008 she has been working largely in the community and joined Australis Medical in 2015. As a Rehabilitation Physician, Dr Parker has a special interest in the management of pain conditions and assisting patients to achieve a return to everyday life including work and recreation and sees vocational and social rehabilitation as important components of pain management rehabilitation. Dr Parker has strong links with other community clinicians, including Psychologists, Hand and Physiotherapists, General Practitioners and Surgeons to assist with patient management. She consults also at the Christchurch Artificial Limb Centre and has a special interest in the management of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. 



Dr Monica Ford

Monica comes from a public health background and is specialising in aviation medicine.  She provides CAA and CASA pilot medicals, as well as rail medicals. She provides occupational medicine services to the Christchurch Engine Centre and Virgin Australia (NZ).  She is a Australasian Medical Review Officer and provides qualified oversight of Drug and Alcohol Management Plans.








Dr David Hartshorn

Dr Hartshorn is an Occupational Physician who has worked in a variety of manufacturing and food processing industries. He is currently National Medical Officer for the New Zealand Fire Service. He provides national medical advice to the IHC and Idea services.  He has extensive experience in injury assessment and rehabilitation, both from an ACC perspective and also as part of industry based on-site programs. He has extensive experience providing independent advice to insurers and employers regarding the issues of rehabilitation and work fitness. He has been involved in the assessment and investigation of workplace exposures with possible adverse health effects.  He has had over ten years experience in medico-legal reporting for ACC, insurance companies, Employers, Unions, and Law firms.





Dr James Foulds

Dr James Foulds is a Consultant Psychiatrist who has worked with the Australis Medical team since 2010, and has a particular interest in occupational and aviation psychiatry, alcohol disorders and general adult psychiatry. James has helped to develop, and co-presents, our management seminar ‘Managing Employees with Psychological Health Issues.’ James also has a Clinical Senior Lecturer position at the University of Otago Christchurch where he is a convener of undergraduate teaching in Addiction Medicine. 


Dr Tim Rumball

Tim is a Occupational Physician and Rural GP, who is currently based in NSW, Australia.  He currently provides Occupational Medicine services to Snowy Hydro, and has previously worked for Meridian Energy, the Royal New Zealand Navy, Pacific Steel (part of Fletcher Steel), Sanitarium Health Food Company, Auckland District Health Board, Waitemata District Health Board, and Air New Zealand. He is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Medicine with the University of Otago (Wellington). He is also a Class 1 Medical Examiner, allowing him to perform and assess all classes of CAA regulatory medicals.





Dr Sara Souter

Sara is an Occupational Physician currently based in NSW, Australia, where she works for Aspen Medical.  She has a strong sub-speciality interest in Drug and Alcohol Management services for industry, with a particular focus on the transport industry. She has a strong interest in aviation medicine and has 10 years experience in this industry including medical retrieval, medical assistance, and work within airline medical departments. She has ongoing consulting occupational physician roles for a local engine maintenance facility and national waste management facility. Sara is a Class 1 Medical Examiner for CAA and a CASA DAME. 





Dr Mark Floyd

FAFOEM, FFOM (Ire), DOM, FRNZCGP

Mark is currently on a work sabbatical in the Northern Hemisphere but maintains an active engagement in Australasian Occupational & Environmental Medicine.  Mark has involvement in a number of industries including Rail, Maritime, Ports, Mining, Manufacturing, Regional Council, Conservation and Fire Service.  Mark is the previous Departmental Medical Practitioner for the Department of Labour Canterbury West Coast region and maintains engagements with the Department's Psychosocial panel.  He has particular interests in workplace stress, respiratory health mointoring, the issues associated with older workers and rehabilitation from injury and illness.


Gina Gilbreath

Gina is our practice manager and program administrator of our Drug and Alcohol Management Plan services.







Tania Berhault

Tania is an office administrator with Australis Medical and the customer relationship manager with Occupational Health Canterbury.  She has previously worked as a case manager.


Georgina Bayliss

Registered Nurse


Georgina is our Occupational Health Nurse, and is experienced with the Cohort Occupational Health software. She has worked in the mining industry and is experienced in performing health monitoring tests, and providing health and wellness programs.
